Senate Confirms Aminu Yusuf As Chairman Of National Population Commission

The Senate has approved the appointment of Dr. Aminu Yusuf as Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC) and confirmed two others as Federal Commissioners.

The confirmation took place during Tuesday’s plenary after the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population presented its report.

Senator Victor Umeh, who represents Anambra Central and chairs the committee, announced the confirmed nominees as Aminu Yusuf from Niger State (Chairman), Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State, and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State (Commissioners).

Umeh explained that the nominees were screened by the committee on October 14, 2025, and no petitions or criminal allegations were recorded against them.

He said the committee reviewed all relevant documents, including their CVs, police reports, DSS clearances, and Code of Conduct Bureau certificates, before the screening.

According to him, each nominee made a presentation outlining their qualifications, experience, and plans for the Commission, followed by a question-and-answer session.

The committee, he said, was satisfied with their competence and integrity.

Following the report’s presentation, Senator Tony Nwoye from Anambra North seconded the motion for its consideration.

The Senate then deliberated on the report in the Committee of the Whole before Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the matter to a voice vote, and the lawmakers unanimously endorsed all three nominees.

KanyiDaily recalls that the Senate recently confirmed Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
