Nigerians React As ISWAP Kill Brigadier General Uba After Army Denied His Abduction

His death came not long after he took part in a coordinated air and ground assault against insurgents in Borno state.

The army has not issued a statement about Brigadier General Uba’s execution by the ISWAP fighters on Monday.

However, an earlier statement dismissed rumours that the general had been abducted, calling the reports false and warning the public against spreading unverified information.

On Friday, ISWAP fighters ambushed a military team along the Damboa–Wajiroko road in Borno.

It was gathered that the insurgents targeted troops and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) members who were transporting military equipment.

During the exchange of gunfire, two CJTF members and two soldiers were killed, and the attackers also made away with at least 17 military motorcycles.

In a statement released on Saturday, army spokesperson Onyechi Anele denied Uba’s abduction, confirming that two soldiers and two CJTF operatives lost their lives in the clash.

Anele said the brigadier general battled the “insurgents ambush with superior fire power, forcing them to withdraw in disarray and to abandon their mission”.

“During the encounter two brave soldiers and two heroic CJTF members paid the supreme price while on active service to the nation.

“While commending the troops for their gallantry, the Army high command commiserates with families and associates of the deceased gallants for their heroic sacrifice to the nation.

“The Army Headquarters also wishes to debunk the fake narrative going round some media platforms online alleging the abduction of the brigade commander.

“The general public is hereby advised to disregard the fake news regarding the incident while praying for the continuous success of our gallant service men and women.”

Despite the army’s reassurance, ISWAP released its own statement through its Amaq media channel, claiming responsibility for the ambush.

The terrorist group alleged that it had captured the brigade commander, interrogated him, and later executed him.

According to PRNigeria, the general had earlier contacted his superiors to confirm that he was safe and regrouping with his men after the operation.

However, his communication may have unintentionally revealed his location.

General Uba was later captured, questioned briefly, and killed by the insurgents.

The development has triggered widespread outrage among Nigerians on social media.
