Motsepe spoke during a press conference before Nigeria’s third-place match against Egypt at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
He explained that Burna Boy, who performed at the tournament’s closing concert, was stopped by customs officials due to the substantial amount of jewellery in his possession.
Motsepe said airport officials contacted him urgently after the items were flagged during a routine customs check.
He stressed that the situation was not about any crime, but simply a normal process where high-value items must be declared.
“I was called that president please you have to intervene because there are challenges at the airport. I asked what happened and they said ‘Burna Boy has too many beautiful jewellery and like in every country, he just has to declare them’. And the matter was resolved,” he said.
The AFCON 2026 final is scheduled for January 18 at the Complex Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah, where hosts Morocco will face Senegal.
