FIFA Condemns Senegal For Walk-Off Protest Against Morocco During AFCON Final

FIFA President Gianni Infantino criticized some Senegal players for their behaviour during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final, saying the incident spoiled their win.

In a statement sent to AFP, Infantino said it was unacceptable for players to leave the field in protest after a penalty was awarded to Morocco.

He condemned the actions of Senegalese players, staff members, and some supporters who left the pitch, and warned that violence has no place in football.

“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members. It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner,” Infantino said.

“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport, it is simply not right.”

The final was disrupted when many Senegal players walked off the pitch late in normal time.

The match was tied 0-0 when, after a VAR review, a penalty was given to Morocco for a challenge on Brahim Diaz.

Senegal had already been upset earlier when one of their goals was ruled out for a questionable foul.

Former Liverpool player Sadio Mane stayed on the pitch and tried to persuade his teammates to return for the penalty.

Meanwhile, problems erupted in the stands as some Senegal fans attempted to enter the field and clashed with security.

The match was delayed for almost 20 minutes before Diaz took the penalty, which was saved by Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.

Later, Pape Gueye scored in extra time to give Senegal a 1-0 victory.

Infantino congratulated Morocco for their performance and hosting of the tournament, especially as they prepare to co-host the 2030 World Cup.

He also reminded teams that they must respect match officials and follow the rules, warning that actions like these undermine the sport.

“We must always respect the decisions taken by the match officials on and off the field of play,” he said.

“Teams must compete on the pitch and within the Laws of the Game, because anything less puts the very essence of football at risk.”

He added that players and teams should set a positive example for fans watching worldwide and said the scenes from the final must not happen again.

“It is also the responsibility of teams and players to act responsibly and set the right example for fans in the stadiums and millions watching around the world,” he said.

“The ugly scenes witnessed today must be condemned and never repeated. I reiterated that they have no place in football and I expect that the relevant disciplinary bodies at CAF will take the appropriate measures.”
