Fubara’s Impeachment Process On Course, Not Suspended – Rivers Assembly

The Rivers State House of Assembly has confirmed that the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, is still ongoing.

KanyiDaily recalls that the process began on Thursday when the Rivers Assembly started impeachment proceedings.

This followed the reading of gross misconduct charges against the governor by the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Major Jack, which were signed by 26 lawmakers.

On Friday, some reports suggested that the impeachment had been suspended for political solutions.

However, the Assembly denied these claims in a statement issued by Enemi George, chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions, and Complaints.

George revealed that two notices detailing allegations of gross misconduct were forwarded to both the governor and his deputy by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule.

He emphasized that the process has not been suspended or stopped, stressing that the reports are misleading attempts to create confusion and discontent.

“The Rivers State House of Assembly is pleased to inform the good people of Rivers State that the impeachment process commenced by the House on Thursday, January 8, 2026 is fully on course in line with relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the statement read.

“The two notices of allegations of gross misconduct brought pursuant to Section 188 of the Constitution against the Governor and Deputy Governor have been forwarded to them by the Speaker of the House while we await their responses.”

The lawmakers stressed that they are acting within their constitutional powers to uphold the law and prevent any breaches by public officeholders, describing their role as a duty they are committed to.

In response to the false claims that the process was halted, the Assembly accused some people and media outlets of spreading misinformation to create distrust between the legislature and the public.

“We are aware that certain persons and media platforms are at it again to misinform the public, particularly to the effect that the process has been halted or discontinued.

“Therefore, with the leave of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, I call on all and sundry to disregard their antics, as their actions have already failed,” it said.

The statement added, “We remain committed to our constitutional duties and would not be dissuaded by cheap blackmail or threats from those who do not mean well for our country’s nascent democracy.”

“We call on everyone to ignore these misleading reports, as their attempts have already failed,” the Assembly said, reiterating that it will not be intimidated or swayed by threats.

The Assembly also thanked Rivers people for their support and prayers and extended appreciation to all supporters of democracy.

This comes after Rivers APC rejected the move to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Ngozi Odu, saying such action could threaten the state’s stability.
