Rivers Assembly Begins Impeachment Proceedings Against Governor Fubara

RIvers State House of Assembly has began an impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

During a plenary session on Thursday led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the Assembly’s Majority Leader, Major Jack, presented a notice accusing Fubara of gross misconduct.

Citing Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, Jack listed seven allegations against the Rivers governor.

Among them were claims that Fubara ordered the demolition of the Assembly complex, spent public funds without legislative approval, withheld money meant for the Assembly Service Commission, and failed to comply with a Supreme Court ruling on the financial independence of the House.

The notice was reportedly endorsed by 26 members of the Assembly.

After it was read, the Speaker announced that the document would be officially served on the governor within seven days.

Lawmakers also turned their attention to the deputy governor.

The Deputy Leader of the House, Linda Stewart, presented a separate notice accusing Ngozi Odu of gross misconduct.

The allegations against Odu include claims of unconstitutional and reckless use of public funds, interfering with the Assembly’s ability to carry out its constitutional responsibilities, and allegedly allowing people to occupy government offices without proper screening by the recognised legislature.

She was also accused of seeking budget approvals from groups other than the legitimate Rivers State House of Assembly, as well as withholding salaries and allowances meant for the lawmakers and the Assembly Service Commission.

KanyiDaily recalls that Governor Siminalayi Fubara recently announced his defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
