INEC Announces Registration Of Two New Political Parties

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the registration of two new political parties.

The newly registered parties are the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Their inclusion increases the total number of political parties in the country to 21.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, made the announcement on Thursday during the commission’s first quarterly consultative session with political party representatives for 2026.

The gathering marked his first formal meeting with party leaders since taking office in October 2025.

Amupitan explained that the DLA met all the requirements after undergoing a detailed verification process.

He also noted that the NDC was registered following a directive from a Federal High Court.

The meeting was attended by key political figures, including leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Among them were the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the party’s National Chairman, Abdulrahman Mohammed, and National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu.

Representatives of the Labour Party were also present, led by Senator Nenadi Usman and the party’s National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha.

During his remarks, Amupitan raised concerns about increasing internal conflicts within some political parties but assured stakeholders that INEC remains committed to protecting the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.

KanyiDaily recalls that the INEC recently recognised the Labour Party’s National Working Committee headed by Nenadi Usman after a court order.
