Kenneth Okonkwo Calls For Akpabio’s Removal Over Electoral Act [Video]

Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has criticized Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the ongoing controversy surrounding the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, calling for his removal.

Okonkwo made the remarks on “Inside Sources” with Laolu Akande, aired on Channels Television on Sunday.

He accused Akpabio of working against democracy by supporting measures the Supreme Court has previously warned against.

What it means is that Senator Godswill Akpabio has become an enemy of democracy and is sticking to the vicious cycle of election rigging, manipulation, falsification, and subterfuge by trying to maintain the same provision that the Supreme Court told you that if you do, you are an enemy of democracy.

“That man is an enemy of democracy and should be removed if he doesn’t resign,” Kenneth Okonkwo said.

The Senate passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill through its third reading last week.

A key part of the bill, Clause 60 (30), deals with the electronic transmission of election results.

On Wednesday, the Senate decided to keep the system for electronically sending results as outlined in the 2022 Electoral Act.

The lawmakers rejected proposals for real-time results transmission and a 10-year ban on vote-buying, choosing instead to maintain existing penalties, which include fines and jail terms.

This comes after the Senate rejected a proposal to amend Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Amendment Bill that would have made electronic transmission of election results compulsory.
