The party members and supporters marched against recent decisions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Among those seen at the protest were former Anambra governor Peter Obi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Rivers governor Rotimi Amaechi, former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Senate President David Mark, and former Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola.
The demonstration started from Maitama Roundabout and moved toward INEC’s headquarters in the nation’s capital.
The protesting ADC leaders accused INEC of bias, alleging that the commission’s recent actions favour the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and threaten Nigeria’s democratic process.
Some marchers carried placards with messages such as “Hands off our courts,” while Amaechi was seen addressing supporters from a moving van along the route.
Atiku shared photos and videos from the protest on his X page, saying he joined other ADC leaders in a peaceful demonstration against the electoral body’s partisanship.
“Myself and other leaders of the ADC are peacefully protesting against the partisanship of the electoral umpire,” he wrote.
“Our patriotic stance is aimed at safeguarding our democracy and preventing the enthronement of a dictatorship.”
Peter Obi had earlier called on supporters and “well-meaning Nigerians” to join the march, saying the protest was a stand against any move toward a one-party system.
He urged citizens who care about Nigeria’s unity, peace, and security to come out and defend democracy.
“We say NO to a one-party system, and for that today we’re calling out Nigerians who believe in the unity, peace, and security of our country to join us as we defend democracy in our land,” Obi posted on X.
The protest comes amid the ongoing leadership crisis in the ADC, leading INEC to withdrew recognition of rival factions linked to David Mark and Nafiu Bala after citing a Court of Appeal ruling delivered on March 12.
The commission said it would not deal with either side until the matter is resolved in court.
KanyiDaily recalls that the INEC recently warned the ADC against going ahead with its planned congresses and national convention without the commission’s supervision.
