The incident happened around 11 a.m. on Friday while construction workers were at the site, prompting an immediate response from emergency agencies.
In a statement, the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department, through its spokesperson Nkechi Isa, said rescue teams are working to make sure no one remains trapped under the debris.
“Rescue efforts are ongoing to ensure no person is trapped in the rubble of a collapsed two-storey building in Jikwoyi, Abuja Municipal Area Council of the FCT,” the agency stated.
According to the agency, about 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when it suddenly collapsed.
“FEMD Search and Rescue Team say that 17 workers were on the upper floor of the building when it collapsed, injuring five workers and trapping a lone male who was at the ground level of the building,” the statement added.
All the injured victims, including the rescued man, were taken to the Sisters of Nativity Hospital, where they are receiving treatment and are said to be recovering.
Several emergency teams responded to the scene, including the National Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Development Control, the Engineering Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Fire Service, and the FCT Police Command.
Authorities added that excavation at the site is “still ongoing until ground zero to ensure that no person is trapped in the rubble,” the statement read.
