The announcement was made during the party’s presidential primary, where Kayode Babayemi, chairman of the election committee, said the AAC’s decision was based on Sowore’s commitment to democracy, justice, and good leadership.
Babayemi said the party believes Sowore has remained consistent in his struggle for a free and democratic Nigeria.
He also thanked party members, supporters, and stakeholders for standing by the party and supporting its vision ahead of the 2027 elections.
“I declare Omoyele Sowore as the consensus presidential candidate of the African Action Congress,” Babayemi said.
“This decision reflects the confidence of the party in his consistency to leadership and long term commitment to the struggle and justice free and truly democratic Nigeria, I sincerely appreciate every party members, stakeholders, and supporters who came out today in solidarity with the vision and values of our great party.
“Your steadfastness and unwavering belief continues to keep Omoyele Sowore and the consensus candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC).”
Speaking after accepting the nomination, Sowore described the AAC as the only genuine opposition party in the country.
According to him, the party has survived several challenges without relying on political godfathers or corrupt politicians.
“While some claim that there was no alternative to dictatorship, we declared revolutionnow in 2019,” Sowore said.
He also dismissed calls for political alliances with major parties, insisting that the AAC itself represents the coalition Nigerians need.
“And we are here, not only to take the cause of victory, we are here to bring revolutionary change,” he said.
“One of the biggest questions asked of us is, are we not forming a coalition? And we told them, we are the coalition. This is the coalition. You are the coalition. And we are the coalition.”
According to him, the party is made up of hardworking Nigerians both at home and abroad and is not built on violence, corruption, or incompetence.
“It is true. We don’t have a structure of criminality. We don’t have a structure of incompetence. We don’t have a structure of kidnapping. We don’t have a structure of insecurity,” he said.
“We are made up of hard working, young people, old people and Nigerians all over the world. This is a party that started a beautiful revolution.”
Sowore criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), blaming the party for many of the country’s problems, including insecurity and poor governance.
“Except Nigerians are mad. Who is going to join the party of kidnappers? Who is going to join the party of criminals? Who is going to join the party of the most incompetent people on the continent of Africa?” he asked.
Sowore also warned international organisations such as the International Monetary Fund against giving loans to Nigerian politicians.
He claimed that if elected president, his administration would not repay loans obtained irresponsibly by past governments.
