The Anambra State Government has denied claims that Governor Charles Soludo introduced a new burial law restricting the use of cows and goats during condolence visits.

The reaction followed widespread stories suggesting that certain items, including cows and goats, had been banned when visiting grieving families in the state.

Some of the reports also claimed that the law limits condolence gifts to cash, a jar of palm wine, a carton of beer, and a crate of soft drinks.

Others alleged that burials must now hold only on Saturdays and be completed within a single day.

However, in a statement on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Law Mefor, said these claims were completely false and not based on any existing law.

He explained that the state has not introduced any new burial regulation, stressing that the only law in place is the 2019 burial law signed by former governor Willie Obiano.

The claims being circulated are not contained in any section of the 2019 Anambra Burial Law,” the statement reads.

” The assertion that cows and goats are banned at condolence visits is a fabrication designed to mislead the public and incite unnecessary outrage.”

The commissioner also criticised some media organisations for publishing the claims without proper verification, accusing them of helping to spread false information.

It is disappointing and irresponsible that established media houses would abandon basic verification and become conduits for viral fake news,” he said.

He reminded journalists of the need to confirm facts before reporting, noting that failure to do so weakens public confidence in the media.

The state government urged residents to ignore the viral reports and rely on official sources for accurate updates on government policies.

We call on media organisations to uphold professional standards and desist from publishing unverified reports that can cause public disaffection,” the statement added.
