“Why Must Nannies Wear Uniforms to Parties?” — Tomike Challenges Parents’ Practice

Media personality Tomike has sparked a conversation about how domestic staff are treated, particularly when nannies accompany the children they care for to public outings.

In a video shared online, she questioned the decision by some parents to have their nannies wear their work uniforms when attending restaurants, parties and other social gatherings with the family.

Tomike described the practice as uncomfortable and humiliating, while wondering why it appears to be particularly common in Nigeria.

According to her, she would rather have her nanny dressed appropriately when going out with her children because she considers the person caring for them to be an important part of her household.

“I personally find it very humiliating. It’s giving, ‘I’m the nanny and I am the nanny,’” she said.

Although she acknowledged that employers should maintain appropriate boundaries with domestic workers, Tomike stressed that such boundaries should not come at the expense of their dignity.

She further challenged the mindset that nannies must constantly be reminded that they are employees, saying she prefers to make those who care for her children feel appreciated and respected.

Tomike maintained that anyone entrusted with the responsibility of looking after her children becomes an important part of her family environment, and she believes they should be treated with dignity both at home and in public.
