Liverpool was on the verge of securing a crucial victory that would have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League, but Everton’s James Tarkowski stunned the visitors with an equalizer deep into stoppage time.

The late goal sparked wild celebrations from Abdoulaye Doucoure in front of Liverpool’s away supporters, leading to a heated exchange with Curtis Jones. Both players were subsequently sent off.

As tensions flared, some fans encroached onto the pitch, prompting stewards and police to intervene.

The chaos continued when referee Michael Oliver showed red cards to Arne Slot and his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, for their outbursts on the touchline.

A Premier League statement later confirmed Slot’s suspension: “Liverpool head coach Arne Slot was dismissed at the end of the Merseyside derby for using offensive, insulting, or abusive language. He is handed a two-match touchline ban as a result.”

This means Slot will miss Liverpool’s home game against Wolves on Sunday and their away trip to Aston Villa on February 19.

Slot had already served a one-match suspension earlier this season after accumulating three yellow cards.

His assistant, Hulshoff, was also dismissed after the match, preventing either from addressing the media post-game.

Doucoure and Jones have each been handed a one-match ban.

However, uncertainty remains regarding the situation, as the Premier League later removed its statement on Slot’s suspension.

Reports suggest the FA is still reviewing the referee’s report before making a final ruling.

Wednesday’s draw marked the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park before Everton moves to a new stadium.

Liverpool remains seven points ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League title race, with 14 games left in the season.

KanyiDaily recalls that Liverpool appointed Arne Slot as their head coach in 2024, just one day after Jürgen Klopp bid farewell to Anfield.
