A Policeman, Inspector Monday Gabriel allegedly opened fire on his colleagues, killing some of them at Onikan area of Lagos State.
The police officer was said to have gone loose around 5am on Sunday following a disagreement with other members of his team.
According to the Nation, the trigger- happy cop hijacked their operational vehicle after shooting them and drove straight to Akoka in Yaba around 5am where he attempted to access a compound but couldn’t.
Sources say the building had a metallic door and the policeman said to be attached to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) allegedly shot sporadically at the property to gain access.
He was said to have released not less than 30 bullet shots which perforated the metallic door of the building, in his attempt to go in, causing frightened residents to take cover in their respective apartments, from where they put calls across to Police authorities.
Sources said distress calls were made to the Bariga Police Division and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) who deployed operatives to the scene restrained the shooter.
It was gathered the trigger happy cop was screaming incoherently, a development suggestive of a possible mental illness.
He was heard alleging that some persons wanted to corrupt him and that he should be allowed to go home in the name of Jesus.
The police spokesman Bala Elkana told reporters that the command was investigating the matter to understand what truly happened, adding that a statement would be released later. He said:
“He was intercepted along Akoka, disarmed and handcuffed. The rifle and vehicle were recovered.
“The corpse of the deceased Sergeant is deposited in the mortuary for autopsy while the Inspector is taken to Police Hospital for medical examination as he presented signs of mental depression.
“The Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police to take over the investigation.
“The Command deeply condoles with the family of the fallen colleague who paid the supreme price in service to his fatherland”.
