Seyi Shay Under Fire Over Her ‘Harsh Comment’ To Aspiring Singer On Nigerian Idol [Video]
Nigerian singer, Seyi Shay has come under heavy fire on the social media over her harsh verdict on a young aspiring artiste at this year’s audition of the television reality show, Nigerian Idol.
Seyi Shay was one of the judges on the sixth season of the reality television show on Sunday, alongside DJ Sose and Obi Asika.
A yet-to-be-identified teenager had came out on Sunday to make his presentation on the show, and Seyi Shay started laughing while the contestant was presenting.
While giving her verdict after his rendition, Sheyi Shay described his “performance as terrible”. She told the teenager that he should not have auditioned for the show in the first place, adding that he “cannot make money being a singer.”
“I am laughing because I can’t just believe what I just heard. Who told you to come for the show’s audition. You should go back and tell them they’re not your friends. That was not a good one. You have a sweet, token voice but your performance is terrible. You’re never going to make money being a singer.
“I love you, you’re so sweet but you’re not a singer. For songwriting, hit me up, we’ll talk about it but that singing thing won’t work out. Sorry darling,” she said.
Imagine Seyi Shay telling a 17 year old with good voice, who has passion for singing that “YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO MAKE MONEY BEING A SINGER”. Cos you’re God abi?pic.twitter.com/QZsBVNWutG

Seyi Shay’s verdict did not go down well with most Nigerians who accused her of bullying and being aggressive towards the teenager contestant who was only trying to make a career in music in the country.
Below are some of the reactions on Twitter over Seyi Shay’s comments.
The boy is 17.
He barely has 3,000 followers on IG.
He’s only trying to make a career in music in a country that kills its young people. Those words from Seyi Shay were too harsh and too cruel.
One upcoming artiste should never insult another upcoming artiste in such a manner.

If someone had said to Seyi Shay what she said to that boy at the age of 17, it would’ve probably messed up her mental health and destroyed her dreams.

Words are pungent and deep, how you convey a message could break or make someone. Seyi shay choice of words were totally wrong and discouraging, the boy didn’t do well either, two wrongs.

For some1 who couldn’t stay relevant in the music industry insulting and telling a 17 year old boy that he wIll never make money being a singer. Such comments in some cases can even lead to suicide. She shattered his hope. Seyi Shay should be removed as a judge from #NigeriaIdol pic.twitter.com/aVsnenIoYg

When i saw Seyi Shay and Nigerian Idol trending, I thought she went there as a contestant, didn't know she's one of the judges..
Seyi Shay and the guy she bashed are same nah, both are upcoming!!@iamseyishay dey fear make the guy no first her blow.— Lizzy of Port Harcourt (@D_LizzyOla) March 29, 2021
Seyi Shay should not have said that the boy would never make it in music. She should have encouraged him to continue working on his vocal training and return for another audition.

Bants aside, saying Seyi Shay is an upcoming artiste is quite disrespectful, she be music dropout.

Seyi Shay's choice of words are actually worse than that boy's performance pic.twitter.com/xH0VFuf2Od

How I wish that the young man will become successful and the video of Seyi Shay spewing nonsense on him will resurface. It will happen.

with a zero musical success that he can't
make it singing. NAHHH— I Z U 🌟 (@heisizumichaels) March 29, 2021
Simon Cowell told Jennifer Hudson at American Idols season 3 that “This is a prize for those who sing and not for those who shout", babe went on to win Oscar, BAFTA, SAG, 2 Grammys (6 nominations)… Seyi Shay no be God.

The Seyi shay situation is typical of women in positions, especially when the recipient is of opposite gender. We witness it everyday.. in school, in offices. Everywhere

Seyi Shay should have tried the sandwich approach
Praise first
Criticize
Praise them againThat's how to give feedback
Eg: nice voice, I think your performance could be better if trained, once again, nice voice.
How you say a thing matters also.
