Twitter assured the Nigerian government of its commitment of driving civic participation.

Twitter has expressed delight that its operations have been restored in Nigeria after the social media giant was suspended for deleting a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari.

KanyiDaily recalls that the Nigerian Government had suspended Twitter on June 4, 2021, after it removed a post from President Buhari that threatened to punish regional secessionists “in the language they understand”.

The Federal Government and Twitter have been in negotiations since over restoring the service based on a set of conditions, including Twitter registering its operations in Nigeria.

After seven months, President Buhari finally approved the lifting of the suspension on the Twitter operations in Nigeria, effective from midnight January 13, 2022.

Twitter Resumes Operation In Nigeria

Reacting to the development on its Public Policy page, Twitter assured the Nigerian government of its commitment to the country where it is used by people for commerce, cultural engagement, and civic participation.

The tweet reads, “We are pleased that Twitter has been restored for everyone in Nigeria. Our mission in Nigeria and around the world, is to serve the public conversation.

“We are deeply committed to Nigeria, where Twitter is used by people for commerce, cultural engagement, and civic participation.”

KanyiDaily recalls that Lai Mohammed had claimed that Twitter was not banned in Nigeria but only suspended. He also denied reports that the Twitter operation was suspended in Nigeria because it deleted a tweet by President Buhari.
