A Russian airstrike hit a maternity and children’s hospital in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol on Wednesday, wounding 17 people and trapping infants under the rubble.
Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, who disclosed this on his Twitter page, said people were trapped under the wreckage including women near childbirth and children.
Zelensky also called on NATO military alliance to declare a no-fly zone over Ukraine, accusing them of seeming to be “losing humanity” in what he called “a war crime without justification”.
Sharing the video, he wrote: “Mariupol. Direct strike of Russian troops at the maternity hospital. People, children are under the wreckage. Atrocity!
“How much longer will the world be an accomplice ignoring terror? Close the sky right now! Stop the killings! You have power but you seem to be losing humanity.”
It was gathered that at least 17 people are reported to be wounded, although the exact number of victims and casualties are not yet known.
Mariupol city council accused Russian forces of dropping several bombs from the air despite agreeing to a 12-hour ceasefire to allow refugees to evacuate a number of towns and cities.
KanyiDaily recalls that Russian President, Vladimir Putin had declared a partial ceasefire to allow civilians to leave the cities of Mariupol and Volnovakha in Ukraine.
The ceasefire comes after Putin vowed that he will continue the uncompromising fight against those he described as “militants of nationalist armed groups” in Ukraine.
On February 24, Russian troops invaded Ukraine after Vladimir Putin ordered a special military operation in Donbas, killing thousands of military and civilians on both sides.
