Bayern Munich Suspends Sadio Mane For Punching His Teammate, Leroy Sane
Bayern Munich has suspended its winger, Sadio Mane for punching his teammate, Leroy Sane, during an altercation.
Mane and Sane were seen arguing on the pitch during the game which Bayern lost 3-0 to Manchester City at Etihad Stadium in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
It was gathered that things escalated after the match on Tueday night when the pair returned to the dressing room where the two clashed and Mane reportedly punched Sane in the face.
Sky Germany reported that Sane’s lip was bleeding after the altercation and the two players needed to be separated by their fellow team-mates in the dressing room.
After landing back in Munich, Mane took the team bus from the airport while Sane was picked up privately and he was pictured appearing to hide his bottom lip from cameras.
According to Sky Germany, Bayern Munich officials held a meeting on Wednesday to discuss possible punishments for Mane and, among the sanctions considered were a fine, suspension or even “separation” between club and player in the summer.
A statement issued by the club after the meeting said Mane has been fined and has now been temporarily suspended by club chiefs also.
The statement read: “Sadio Mane, 31, will not be included in the FC Bayern squad for this Saturday’s home match against 1899 Hoffenheim. This is due to his misconduct after Bayern’s Champions League match at Manchester City. Mané will also be given a fine.”
Mane, who cost the German champions £35million and earns £250k a week, was allowed to take part in the morning training session at Sabener Strasse on Thursday before the decision was made.
Mane had earlier apologized to teammates for his actions following a meeting with president Oliver Kahn, sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, and former City ace Sane.
He had appeared in good spirits during training, joking with teammate Benjamin Pavard and in discussions with the club’s new head coach, Thomas Tuchel. The ex-Chelsea boss even picked Mane and Sane to train together in the same small group during their warm-up.
KanyiDaily recalls that Sadio Mané was named the CAF 2022 African Player of the Year before joining the German champions from Liverpool in the summer.
