Monday Okpebholo, Dennis Idahosa Sworn In As Edo Governor, Deputy

Monday Okpebholo, the newly elected Governor of Edo State, and his deputy, Dennis Idahosa, were sworn into office on Tuesday.

The Chief Justice of Edo State, Daniel Okungbowa, administered the oath at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, where both leaders pledged to uphold the constitution and work for the well-being of Edo residents.

Party supporters filled the stadium with cheers as Okpebholo and Idahosa took their oaths, marking the start of a new administration.

In his inaugural address, Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to Edo residents for their support, calling it a victory for democracy.

He emphasized that he and Deputy Governor Idahosa would prioritize the welfare of the people.

“Let me start by thanking God for His grace and incredible blessings. Democracy has triumphed again in our dear state,” the governor said.

“For me, this is a humbling moment made possible by you all. Today, you have officially given me the mandate to preside over our dear state as governor for the next four years.

“We will not betray this confidence you have reposed in me and the deputy governor Rt Hon. Dennis Idahosa. The welfare of our citizens is a top priority to us.”

He also outlined his administration’s key goals, including improving state security, connecting communities with better roads, and supporting small businesses to drive economic growth.

The ceremony drew several prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Bola Tinubu, along with other APC governors, Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, and former Edo governor Adams Oshiomhole.

This inauguration follows a closely contested political season in Edo State, where Okpebholo triumphed over PDP’s Asue Ighodalo in the September 21 election, with a vote count of 291,667 against Ighodalo’s 247,274. Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata came in third with 22,763 votes.
