In a statement on Wednesday by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NIDCOM’s media director, the commission said it would work with the Nigerian embassy in Belgium to uncover the truth behind Eheri’s death.
The issue came to light through a petition sent to NIDCOM chairperson Abike Dabiri-Erewa by members of the Nigerian community in Luxembourg.
The petition, signed by Sunday Adekolu, the group’s national coordinator, claimed that Eheri was arrested on February 10 while carrying some food items.
Shockingly, he was confirmed dead the very next day without any official explanation.
Adekolu emphasized the need for full transparency, saying justice must be served to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“The late Eheri Daniel was a Nigerian with an untainted record in Luxembourg and a residence permit holder,” Adekolu stated.
“To prevent a recurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg, there must be transparency and justice in the handling of this case.”
According to the petition, Nigeria’s ambassador to Belgium, Obinna Onowu, who also oversees relations with Luxembourg, sent two letters to local authorities about the incident but has yet to receive any response.
“The ambassador’s efforts were rebuffed, as there had been no official response to his letters on the matter,” the petition reads.
Adekolu urged NIDCOM to step in and demand a proper investigation, including a full autopsy report from the Luxembourg police.
Reacting to the news, Dabiri-Erewa condemned the situation, offered condolences to Eheri’s family, and promised that the commission would actively pursue answers regarding what happened.
KanyiDaily recalls that Abike Dabiri-Erewa recently urged Cape Verde’s authorities to release a group of Nigerian tourists who were recently detained in the country.
