Multiple explosions rocked the Giwa army barracks in Maiduguri on Wednesday, causing widespread panic throughout the Borno state capital.

In a statement, the acting deputy director of army public relations, Reuben Kovangiya said the blasts were triggered by extremely high temperatures.
Kovangiya explained that the heat led to the detonation of some munitions at the barracks.
He said that troops from Operation HADIN KAI were deployed to secure the area and prevent any attempts by criminals to exploit the chaos.
According to him, emergency response teams, including the Borno state fire service and other security agencies, worked together to contain the situation and prevent further damage.
Kovangiya urged the public to ignore rumors of an attack in Maiduguri and stay calm, assuring that the situation was under control.
“The Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI Maiduguri, wishes to inform the general public of an incident involving the explosion of ordnance in one of our ammunition storage facilities located in Giwa Barracks,” the statement reads.
“The explosion was due to the current high temperatures in Maiduguri, which led to the explosion of some munitions.
“The situation has, however, been brought under control with the combined efforts of the Borno State Fire Service Department and other fire trucks from security agencies.
“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have been deployed to protect the public and prevent miscreants from taking advantage of the situation
“The explosion happened at one of our ammunition storage sites in Giwa Barracks due to the intense heat.
“Thanks to the prompt actions of the Borno State Fire Service and other security personnel, the fire was quickly put out.”
Meanwhile, Borno State Police said the explosions were caused by a fire that broke out in the barracks’ ammunition storage.
Police spokesperson Nahum Daso confirmed that the heat in Maiduguri likely started the fire, which caused the munitions to detonate.
Authorities assured the public that everything was under control and urged people not to panic.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Nigerian Army recently raised concerns about the low number of applicants from the South-East region in its ongoing recruitment drive.
