A 67-year-old French tourist, Pietier Gilles, was found dead in a hotel room in Gboko, Benue State.
Zagazola Makama, a publication that covers security issues in the Lake Chad region, reported that Pietier Gilles had checked into Hotel Jovina on Friday and was discovered dead the following day, Saturday.
The Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Udeme Edet, confirmed the incident to TheCable on Monday.
He said the hotel manager, Emmanuel Laha, reported the matter to the local police on Sunday.
Laha explained that Gilles fell ill on June 7 but refused to go to a hospital.
As his health worsened, the hotel brought in a doctor to check on him, but he was already dead by the time the doctor arrived.
“On receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officer led a patrol team to the hotel where photographs of the scene were taken.
“The body was evacuated to the General Hospital in Gboko for preservation and autopsy,” Zagazola quoted some police sources as saying.
Pietier Gilles had reportedly entered Nigeria from Niger Republic on May 19, traveling by sports bicycle as part of what seemed to be a long-distance tour.
The police have launched an investigation and say further details will be shared after the autopsy is completed.
