Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has mourned the death of legendary highlife musician, “Gentleman” Mike Ejeagha.
KanyiDaily recalls that Mike Ejeagha died at the age of 95 on Friday night, June 6, 2025, after battling a long-term illness.
Governor Mbah said Ejeagha’s death has created a void that will be hard to fill, describing it as a huge loss to the state and Nigeria’s music community.
He described the late singer as a humble and down-to-earth man whose music touched lives far beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Mbah assured that the state government would take further steps to honour and preserve the memory of the music icon.
He noted that before Ejeagha’s death, his administration had already taken steps to recognise him, including reconstructing the long-neglected Obinagu Road and renaming it after the singer.
The road, now called Chief Mike Ejeagha Road, leads to the musician’s residence in Abakpa Nike, Enugu.
Taking to his social media page, Governor Peter Mbah wrote: “I’m profoundly saddened by the death of music icon, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha. Mike Ejeagha was a legend, a cultural ambassador, and a revered son of Enugu State.
“He was one of the finest musicians of his generation with an easygoing personality and humility that belied his towering celebrity status. I will always cherish fond memories of the time spent in his company – the warmth and wisdom he radiated; the joy he found in the ordinary.”
“This is a loss not only for his immediate family; it’s a big loss for Enugu State, the entire music community, and the country as well.
“Ejeagha’s immense talent and genius lay in how he took simple indigenous folktales and turned them into unforgettable songs that resonate across cultures.”
Mbah added that Ejeagha’s influence went far beyond Nigeria, promising that the state would continue to honour Ejeagha’s legacy and support his family.
“His death leaves a huge void that will be difficult to fill. But the legacies he has left behind will last a lifetime.
“On behalf of the Enugu State government, I offer heartfelt condolences to the Ejeagha family and assure them of our support.
“As a government, we would ensure that his memory is duly immortalised.
“Above all, I pray that his family experiences the comforting grace of God’s love, and the fortitude to bear the loss,” the governor added.
KanyiDaily recalls that in 2024, Nigerian skit maker, Brain Jotter met with Mike Ejeagha after gifting him N2million for use of his viral song “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo.”
