Kano Govt Announces 12-Day School Holiday For Eid-el-Kabir
Kano State Government has announced a 12-day school break for Eid-el-Kabir, running from June 4 to June 16, for all primary and secondary schools across the state.

The announcement was made in a statement from the state’s Commissioner for Education, Ali Makoda, and was signed by the ministry’s Public Enlightenment Director, Balarabe Kiru.
According to the statement, the break won’t affect the 2024/2025 academic calendar or any scheduled public holidays.
Boarding school students are to observe the holiday until June 15, while day students are expected back on June 16.
Makoda advised parents and guardians to pick up their children from boarding schools on the morning of June 4 and ensure they return promptly after the holiday.
He thanked residents for their continued support and wished students a peaceful and happy Eid celebration.
Eid-el-Kabir, which falls on June 6 this year, is one of Islam’s two major festivals, the other being Eid-el-Fitr, which follows the Ramadan fast.
The federal government usually declares a two-day holiday for Eid, similar to what it does during Christmas.
However, Kano’s 12-day break reflects a trend of extended school closures for religious reasons in parts of northern Nigeria.
Earlier in 2025, during the Ramadan period, states like Bauchi, Katsina, Kano, and Kebbi ordered schools—both public and private—to close for as long as five weeks to accommodate fasting.
In Katsina, the Hisbah Board, which enforces Islamic moral codes, even instructed all private schools to shut down during Ramadan and warned that failure to comply wouldn’t be tolerated.
These long religious holidays have stirred debate, with many in the education sector raising concerns over their impact on learning and school schedules.
KanyiDaily recalls that the Kano Government recently introduced new media rules that ban live political programmes and prevent journalists from asking questions considered “provocative” during interviews.
