Gunmen launched a violent attack on Wednesday morning along the Ezinnachi/Okigwe stretch of the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway, abducting several passengers and reportedly shooting others.

According to Vanguard, the incident happened between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m., when the gunmen blocked the highway and operated without any resistance.
One survivor, who was traveling from Umuahia shortly before the attack, said their driver made a sudden U-turn to avoid the gunmen.
“We escaped by divine grace. They stationed close to the hospital under construction after Ezinnachi before Okigwe. They shot some people and some vehicles were parked there.
“We don’t know the exact number of victims. Every vehicle is turning and running back to either Okigwe or Umuahia,” the passengers said.
As of the time of filing this report, it was unclear if police or other security personnel had arrived at the scene.
The stretch between Ezinnachi and Okigwe has recently become increasingly dangerous.
Two security checkpoints in the area have been removed, leaving a long section of the highway exposed.
A new checkpoint has been set up just beyond the Okigwe Roundabout in a more populated area, but large portions of the road remain unguarded, raising concerns about growing insecurity in the region.
KanyiDaily recently reported how a police inspector, Donfa Chirtip was killed, and his wife, Victoria, abducted by gunmen at Kurmin Kare in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
