The National Assembly has suspended all legislative duties on hold to mourn the former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Saturday, July 13, 2025, in London.

National Assembly Suspends Legislative Duties For One Week To Mourn Buhari

A statement by the Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, said both the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, agreed to suspend activities until Tuesday, July 22.

The statement explained that this break is a mark of honour for Buhari’s service to the country.

Lawmakers were also urged to adjust any official or personal plans so they can take part in the funeral events.

“In honour of his legacy and service to the nation, I am directed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to inform members of the National Assembly and the general public that all legislative activities are suspended immediately until Tuesday, 22 July 2025,” the statement read.

“All members of the National Assembly are urged to reschedule their engagements to enable full participation in the burial activities of the late President.”

The National Assembly leadership expressed their sympathy to the Buhari family, the people of Katsina State, and the nation at large.

“On behalf of members and staff of the National Assembly, the leadership of both chambers extends heartfelt condolences to: the government and people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; the government and people of Katsina State; his wife, children, and the entire Buhari family,” the statement continued.

Buhari, who once ruled as a military leader and later served two terms as an elected president, was known for promoting national unity and for his strong personal values.

“President Muhammadu Buhari will be remembered for his commitment to Nigeria’s unity and his integrity. May Almighty Allah grant his soul eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the statement concluded.

KanyiDaily recalls that Vice President Kashim Shettima and President Bola Tinubu’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, recently arrived in London to receive the remains of Muhammadu Buhari.
