A phone repairer, Alkasum Ibrahim has been allegedly beaten to death by a Nigerian soldier identified as Lance Corporal Ahmada A. in Mayo-Belwa, Adamawa State.
According to Sahara Reporters, the incident happened on Wednesday when the soldier got angry over the delayed repair of his girlfriend’s mobile phone.
Witnesses say the victim working on the woman’s phone when she became impatient with the delay.
Rather than wait, she contacted her boyfriend, the soldier, to complain.
Not long after, Lance Corporal Ahmada showed up at the repair shop visibly angry and attacked Alkasum without any explanation.
The beating was so severe that Alkasum lost consciousness on the spot and later died from the injuries.
One eyewitness, Nuruddeen Abubakar, said: “This is heartbreaking. The boy was just hustling, trying to make ends meet. His only ‘crime’ was not fixing a phone on time. And now, he’s dead.”
The soldier reportedly fled after the incident, and his whereabouts remain unknown, sparkling public outrage in the community.
The local community and human rights groups are calling for justice, condemning the gross abuse of power by someone meant to protect lives.
“How can someone trained to protect life become a killer over a mobile phone? This is lawlessness of the highest order,” a local youth leader told SaharaReporters.
“This is not just a case of brutality, it’s murder. The Nigerian military must hand over the suspect for prosecution,” one of the organisations said in a statement.
Adamawa Police Command spokesperson, Suleiman Nguroje said the military is already investigating the matter and is expected to hand the suspect over to the police for prosecution.
Nguroje, said, “We have been informed of the case. The military authorities are currently conducting an internal investigation and are expected to hand over the suspect for further police action.”
