FG Declares Wednesday As Public Holiday For Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day

Federal Government has announced that Wednesday, October 1, will be a public holiday to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day.

The announcement was made on Monday by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo on behalf of the government.

In a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, the ministry’s permanent secretary, Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians on reaching this “historic milestone” and encouraged everyone to continue promoting patriotism, unity, and resilience—the values that have kept the country together since 1960.

The minister also urged citizens to support President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, which emphasizes national revival, economic growth, and shared prosperity.

He expressed confidence that, with everyone’s efforts, Nigeria would continue to progress peacefully and develop steadily, wishing all Nigerians a happy and memorable Independence Day celebration.

Meanwhile, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has cancelled its “Africa Hometown” initiative, saying the programme created unnecessary confusion and was widely misunderstood.
