Prince Andrew Gives Up Royal Titles As Duke Of York Following Series Of Scandals

Prince Andrew has agreed to give up his royal titles, including Duke of York, after discussions with King Charles.

The decision follows years of controversy surrounding his connections to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which have drawn heavy criticism and calls for Buckingham Palace to take stronger action.

According to a statement released by Buckingham Palace on Friday, October 17, Andrew said he will stop using his royal titles and honors because the ongoing scandals have become a distraction from the work of King Charles and the rest of the royal family.

“In discussion with the King, and my immediate and wider family, we have concluded the continued accusations about me distract from the work of His Majesty and the Royal Family,” said a statement from Prince Andrew.

“I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my family and country first. I stand by my decision five years ago to stand back from public life.

“With His Majesty’s agreement, we feel I must now go a step further. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I vigorously deny the accusations against me.”

The decision was reportedly made in consultation with both King Charles and Prince William.

While Andrew will remain a prince by birth, he will no longer be known as the Duke of York, a title given to him by his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

Andrew had already been stripped of his “His Royal Highness” status and had stopped representing the royal family in official roles. His public presence will now be even more limited.

Over the past several years, Prince Andrew has faced numerous scandals, including his 2022 settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse when she was 17.

He also came under scrutiny for questionable financial dealings and his alleged ties to a Chinese business figure later identified as a spy.

As a result of these developments, Andrew’s former wife will now be known simply as Sarah Ferguson, without the Duchess of York title. Their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, will retain their titles.

Andrew is expected to remain at Royal Lodge in Windsor, a residence he leases privately until 2078.

The latest move comes just as a memoir by the late Virginia Giuffre is set to be published, which could reignite public discussion of Andrew’s past.

Giuffre had alleged that she was one of several women sexually exploited by Epstein and that she was forced to have sex with Andrew on multiple occasions. Andrew has consistently denied all the allegations.

In response to the announcement, Giuffre’s brother, Sky Roberts, told BBC Newsnight that his late sister “would be very proud” of the development.

“We have shed a lot of happy and sad tears today. I think happy because in a lot of ways this vindicates Virginia. All the years of work that she put in is now coming to some sort of justice,” Mr Roberts said.

Another Epstein accuser, Haley Robson, described the moment as “bittersweet” and said it was “long overdue.”

She commended King Charles for taking decisive action, adding, “Virginia Giuffre started this fight and we’re going to see it through”, adding that “I really wish that she could have been here to see all of what she started”.

“Having him [Prince Andrew] step down and be stripped of his titles is something that is long delayed, and it is very appropriate, and kudos to King Charles,” Ms Robson said.

Prince Andrew’s name has also surfaced in various financial disputes, including a 2022 court case involving a Turkish businesswoman, from whom he later returned a £750,000 payment. Though no wrongdoing was proven, the revelations added to growing unease within the royal household.

The decision to give up his titles marks another step in Andrew’s long fall from public life, a move many see as an attempt by the royal family to distance itself from the ongoing controversies surrounding him.
