FCCPC Seals Ikeja Electric For Violating Consumer Rights

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) on Thursday sealed the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) office in Alausa, Lagos, over alleged violations of consumer rights.

Bola Adeyinka, the FCCPC’s Director of Surveillance and Investigation, said the action was taken under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018 after several failed attempts to resolve the issue.

According to her, shutting down the facility became necessary only after the company ignored multiple opportunities to comply.

“Sealing this facility is a proportionate enforcement measure taken only after repeated engagement and several opportunities for voluntary compliance,” Adeyinka said in a statement.

“The seal will remain in place until Ikeja Electric complies fully with the directives issued by both NERC and the FCCPC and provides written evidence of that compliance.”

The commission explained that NERC had earlier ordered Ikeja Electric to split a Maximum Demand account into 20 non-Maximum Demand accounts.

This was meant to recognise 19 residential units and a service point belonging to a complainant as individual customers and to ensure they received the necessary meters and proper connections.

“Ikeja Electric did not carry out that decision. Because of this failure, the complainant has been without electricity supply for more than two and a half years.

“This was despite paying all charges requested by Ikeja Electric and meeting every obligation. The lack of electricity has prevented the complainant from putting the nineteen residential units to use.”

FCCPC said it had attempted to resolve the matter through warnings and dialogue, including an April 2025 directive outlining what the company needed to do and when.

When that was ignored, the agency issued a Compliance Notice on October 2, 2025, giving the company seven business days to act, but no steps were taken.

At the time of filing this report, Ikeja Electric, a major electricity supplier in Lagos, had not issued any response.
