Family Claims Bullying Led To 12-Year-Old Son’s Death At FGC Ikot Ekpene

A grieving family is calling for justice after the death of their 12-year-old son, Ufokobong Edwin Godwin, a Junior Secondary School student at Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, in Akwa Ibom State.

The boy passed away on Easter Sunday, April 5, days after he was reportedly assaulted in the school hostel by a senior student in SS3 before the holiday break.

Videos circulating online show his mother crying beside his corpse, accusing the senior student of causing her son’s death and vowing to seek justice.

Other videos capture family members mourning as he was laid to rest, while his grandmother is seen sitting on the ground in grief near the ambulance carrying his body.

According to LIB, a student who shared the hostel with the deceased said the incident began during exams when the senior student demanded food from the boy.

He allegedly refused, saying he didn’t have enough. The senior student was then said to have struck him on the neck, causing him to lose consciousness.

Other students reportedly raised the alarm, and he was taken to the hospital.

He later regained consciousness and was returned to school.

When the holidays began, his parents picked him up without being told about what had happened.

Back home, the boy started complaining of severe neck pain.

His parents initially treated him with painkillers, but his condition worsened, prompting his father to rush him to the hospital, where he later died on Easter Sunday.

A report claimed that doctors linked his death to complications from blood clots around his neck.

The hospital later confirmed that he d!ed from complications associated with blood clots around his throat (neck area),” Oga Yenne TV alleged.

When contacted, the boy’s father declined to speak in detail, saying he was still in deep pain over the loss.

Sorry, I’m not in a position to make any comment now. I’m still in pains,” LIB quoted him saying.

This comes a few weeks after Edo State Government ordered the arrest and prosecution of students from Igbinedion Education Centre who were involved in a bullying incident that went viral online.
