Fire Outbreak Destroy Goods Worth Millions Of Naira At Calabar Mall [Video]

A fire has destroyed parts of the popular SPAR shopping mall in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The fire broke out early Saturday morning and spread through one section of the mall, destroying several shops and goods worth millions of naira.

The affected section includes a pharmacy, clothing store, perfume shop and phone store.

The mall also houses several international retail brands, including SPAR.

Workers at the affected businesses were seen in tears as they watched the fire destroy their goods and property.

It was gathered that only one fire service truck was deployed to fight the blaze as the flames continued to spread across the affected section.

Eitokpah Akata, spokesperson for the Cross River State Police Command, confirmed the incident saying the fire began in the early hours of Saturday.

Akata said several traders lost their goods and other belongings in the incident.

According to him, an electrical fault is suspected to have caused the fire, although investigations are still underway to determine what exactly triggered the outbreak.

He added that no death or injury had been reported at the time of filing the report.

The police spokesperson also said officers had been deployed to the mall and secured the area to prevent people from looting the affected shops.

We don’t have a probable cause for now, but it is most likely linked to an electrical fault,” he said.

Akata added that the police would provide further updates as the investigation continues.
