National Identification Number Becomes Mandatory For All Transactions From Sept. 2015

From September 1st 2015, the National Identity Number (NIN) will become mandatory for all transactions involving the identification of individuals in Nigeria.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is urging Nigerians to enroll in the National Identity database to get their NIN, as the National Identity Number (NIN) will officially become compulsory for all transactions involving the identification of individuals across the country.

NIMC General Manager, Corporate Communications, Abdulhamid Umar, confirmed the news that transactions that will require NIN include: Issuance of International Passport, opening of individual and/or group bank accounts, purchase of insurance policies, purchase, transfer and registration of land by any individual, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), consumer credits, and more.

“Consequently, any government agency/institution, bank, insurance company and all other institutions offering services and/or involved in transactions requiring the identity of an individual must first demand for the NIN.
