Summer 2021 is here and we can finally travel! Getting your family vacation planned may still take a focus on both distance and budget. Here are four perfect vacation ideas to consider if you want to enjoy your time away from home while staying safe as a clan.
Take a trip to the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island in Michigan. This historic vacation spot offers family-friendly deals that include breakfast and dinner. While staying on Mackinac Island, make sure you bring good shoes as the hotel is only accessible by ferry. Travel on the island is generally managed either by carriage, bicycle or on foot.
Stroll the island and enjoy the cool breezes off the water. Take a kayak tour of the turtle enclosure and stop by the blacksmith shop to learn an old skill. Study military history at the remarkable Fort Mackinac and finish off the day with a sip and sail cruise so you can enjoy the sunset. Bring bug spray, sunscreen and a jacket. Nights can get cool, but your sleep quality will be amazing.
If you are interested in the east coast, sit down with your older kids and watch the movie Rocky, then go to Philadelphia so you can let your kids tire themselves out on the steps. Since you are on the steps, you can check out the Philadelphia Art Museum at the same time.
Take a tour of the Betsy Ross House, check out the Liberty Bell, and remember that hot summer at Independence Hall. If you can find a performance of the musical 1776, take the whole family so you can better understand just what an anxious summer that was! The Fireman’s Hall is worth a visit, and your little ones will love the Please Touch Museum, designed with children in mind.
Explore the South
If you and your family love the water, or if one of your clan is big on birds, it is time to go camping in Louisiana state parks. If you do not have a lot of camping gear, no worries. You can easily rent a yurt or a large tent for the whole family or rent a couple of sites side by side for older children.
You can enjoy a break from the workday world at Lake Claiborne State Park. A furnished site will include a tent on an elevated platform. There is a queen size memory foam mattress, a propane heater, fire pit and grill, and camp loo. Plus, there are showers and flush toilets on the grounds. An additional pop-up tent is provided.
This park is straight east of Shreveport. You can easily get on the road with very little gear and load up on groceries in Shreveport or Monroe to the west. Rent a kayak, take a hiking trail, or just hang out on the beach and swim to cool off. Bliss!
For those with easy access to the western United States, there are many national park options. If you enjoy camping, make sure you also keep an eye out for national forests, as low-cost camping options abound in these areas. Consider investing in an America the Beautiful Pass for easy access into many parks each year.
If you head to Yellow Stone;
● go in the summer and do not be surprised by the snow
● leave plenty of time for travel
● be ready to linger
For those who are not confident mountain drivers, consider finding a hotel room and taking a bus tour of the area. The scenery will be much more enjoyable with a professional managing the high passes, animal roadblocks and possible weather challenges.
Finally, if you are headed up in elevation, make sure you bring water and sun protection. Get everyone in your family a refillable water bottle and consider investing in a traveling water filter that you can set on the counter in your hotel room or on the floor of your tent. Altitude sickness is no joke and dehydration will make it much worse.
If the pandemic had you stuck at home for a year, this summer vacation season would be even more special. Consider treating everyone to a pair of binoculars before your camping trip, and make sure everybody has good-fitting walking shoes.
Meanwhile, if your heading to Africa to enjoy the summer holiday, Nigeria is one fun country to never ignore and Lagos is the place to be for all the buzz.
