This decision comes less than a week after President Yoon Suk Yeol caused nationwide uprising by briefly declaring martial law.
On December 3, Yoon deployed special forces and helicopters to parliament in an attempt to enforce the martial law decree. However, lawmakers swiftly rejected the move, forcing him to revoke the order.
The embattled president, who faces widespread public disapproval, narrowly avoided impeachment over the weekend.
Despite surviving the motion, large crowds gathered in freezing weather to demand his resignation.
Yoon remains in office, but he and his close allies are under investigation, including a probe into alleged insurrection.
The justice ministry confirmed on Monday that Yoon is the first sitting South Korean president to face a travel ban.
During a parliamentary hearing, immigration official Bae Sang-up confirmed the ban when asked directly.
Alongside Yoon, others involved in last week’s events are also restricted from traveling.
This includes former defense minister Kim Yong-hyun, who is currently detained, and former interior minister Lee Sang-min.
Military officials General Park An-su, who led the martial law operation, and counterintelligence commander Yeo In-hyung have also been barred from leaving the country.
Investigators questioned General Park further on Monday as part of the ongoing probe.
