SDP Suspends National Chairman, Shehu Gabam Over Alleged Diversion Of Party Funds

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has announced the suspension of its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, over accusations of financial misconduct.

SDP also suspended Nnadi Clarkson, the party’s National Auditor, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, the National Youth Leader.

A statement issued on Tuesday by Rufus Aiyenigba, SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, said the suspensions stem from allegations involving embezzlement, misappropriation, and diversion of party funds.

Aiyenigba stated that the decision was made in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution, specifically Articles 19.1, 19.3(i), and 19.5 of the 2022 (as amended).

“The national working committee of the Social Democratic Party has approved the immediate suspension of Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the national chairman, along with Nze Nnadi Clarkson and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, over grave allegations of gross financial misconduct, embezzlement, misappropriation and diversion of party funds,” the statement read.

According to the party, the trio was linked to several unauthorized transactions, including moving funds from party accounts without approval and engaging in activities for personal financial gain.

Aiyenigba emphasized that the SDP is committed to transparency and accountability and will not tolerate corruption within its ranks.

“This action is to demonstrate to the general public that the SDP — generally esteemed by Nigerians as a disciplined and credible alternative political platform — has zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of office.

“The suspension is to allow for a thorough investigation. Our integrity as a political party must be upheld at all times,” he added.

To ensure a proper review of the matter, he said an interim investigative panel has been set up to audit the party’s financial records and recommend next steps, which may include further disciplinary action or legal proceedings.

In the meantime, Sadiq Umar Abubakar, who serves as Deputy National Chairman, has been asked to step in as acting chairman.

The party has also informed relevant bodies, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), anti-corruption agencies, and security operatives, about the suspensions.

KanyiDaily recalls that former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, recently resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing dissatisfaction with the ruling party’s direction.
