It was gathered that prosecutors are pushing for an 18-year prison sentence and heavy financial fines over alleged financial misconduct.

The trial, which started on Monday, June 30, centers around Ebang and several other people linked to a government-owned company under the Ministry of Finance.

Baltasar Engonga is being accused of stealing public funds, illegally enriching himself, and misusing his authority while in office.

Prosecutors say Ebang is responsible for diverting over one billion CFA francs, roughly $1.67 million, during his time at the agency.

They’re recommending eight years in prison for embezzlement, four years and five months for illegal enrichment, and just over six years for abuse of power.

In addition, they want him fined 910 million CFA francs and barred from holding any government position while serving his sentence.

Ebang’s legal team has denied all the allegations, insisting that neither he nor the other officials involved committed any wrongdoing.

The court is expected to deliver its verdict in the next few days, marking the final stages of this high-profile corruption case.
