President Bola Tinubu has approved a new scholarship program that will allow students from the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) to study in Nigeria, starting from the next academic session.

Tinubu made this known on Monday, June 30, during a joint press briefing with Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre, in Gros Islet.

According to him, the programme is already in motion and will be managed through a joint committee formed by Nigeria and OECS member countries.

“The Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States is very close to us in Africa. We are moving forward to facilitate business and education opportunities, capacity building, and explore other areas such as agriculture and food security. We won’t drop the ball,” Tinubu said.

He said the scholarship initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean, especially in areas like education, trade, and development.

Tinubu also revealed that both sides are working on visa waivers for holders of official and diplomatic passports from OECS nations, making travel and collaboration easier.

Addressing possible obstacles to cooperation, the Nigerian president brushed aside concerns and focused instead on moving forward.

“I don’t look at difficulties. I look at problem-solving. If we move on a straight line, we get our goal achieved, and there will be no problems,” he said.

Prime Minister Pierre welcomed the move, calling the scholarships a meaningful show of partnership.

He also noted that other important issues such as easing visa processes, improving air travel, and boosting tourism were part of their wider discussions.

“We expect students to begin their studies in Nigeria in the next academic year. We have formed a joint committee to address education, trade, and travel issues, and the people-to-people exchange will be key,” Pierre said.

Earlier that day, Tinubu addressed a special session of Saint Lucia’s Parliament, where he laid out his vision for building stronger ties between Nigeria and the Caribbean.

KanyiDaily recalls that President Bola Tinubu also offered visa-free access to holders of diplomatic and official passports from countries in the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS).
