His comments come amid the public clash between Wizkid and Fela’s son, Seun Kuti, who recently criticised the former’s supporters for likening the singer to his father.
The situation escalated after Wizkid responded by claiming he was bigger than the legendary Afrobeat pioneer, a statement that stirred further reactions online.
Reacting to the controversy, Daddy Freeze dismissed the comparison, arguing that Wizkid and Fela operate on entirely different levels.
The media personality, who spoke in a video shared on social media, said Fela’s legacy went far beyond music.
He described Fela not only as an influential musician but also as a committed activist and humanitarian whose impact shaped social and political consciousness in Nigeria.
Freeze said Wizkid would need to openly challenge the government and actively fight for civil rights before he could be fairly compared to Fela Kuti.
He recalled how Fela was released from prison because authorities feared the consequences if he died in custody, explaining that the decision was made to avoid public outrage.
Daddy Freeze stressed that Fela was never just a controversial figure, but a freedom fighter whose music and activism were inseparable.
According to him, any discussion about Fela must include the ideals he stood for, noting that his songs and his resistance to oppression were deeply connected and cannot be separated.
He said, “Until Wizkid is ready to stand up and stone government, he shouldn’t compare himself to Fela. Did you know that Fela was released from prison just to prevent him from dying there?
“They released him to go and die at his home because they knew his death would spark an uproar if he died in the prison. That was 1995, I was a fresher in the university then.
“Fela was not a troublemaker; he was a freedom fighter. We are talking about music, but I cannot talk about Fela, if I don’t talk about everything he stood for. His activism and music went hand-in-glove. You can’t separate the two.”
KanyiDaily recalls that Seun Kuti also accused Wizkid of stealing “Big Bird,” a nickname he has used for years.
