The Senate has approved the appointment of five new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Senate Confirms Appointment Of Five New INEC RECs

This decision was made after the Senate adopted a report from its INEC committee during Wednesday’s plenary session.

Those confirmed include Umar Yusuf Garba, Sa’ad Umar Idris, Chukwuemeka Obeziako, Umar Mukhtar, and Johnson Alalibo Sinikiem.

Their appointments are in line with Section 154(1) of the amended 1999 Constitution.

Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who chairs the INEC committee, said all five nominees met the necessary qualifications for the role. Each commissioner will serve a five-year term.

President Bola Tinubu originally nominated them in a letter to the Senate dated March 18.

In the letter, Tinubu explained that the appointments were being made in accordance with the Constitution and also noted that the letter replaced an earlier one sent on March 12.

He clarified that the change was made to approve a reappointment for the commissioner from Borno State.

KanyiDaily recalls that in 2023, President Bola Tinubu also appointed nine new INEC REC, each serving a five-year term.
