President Bola Tinubu has hailed Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka as a true patriot and national treasure as he turns 91.

In a statement issued by his special adviser on information and strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president celebrated the playwright on the occasion of his birthday.
Tinubu described Soyinka as a highly respected literary icon, human rights advocate, and intellectual figure whose contributions have shaped Nigeria’s cultural and political landscape.
He said that Soyinka’s work in education, activism, and nation-building is deeply inspiring, noting that his legacy continues to impact generations of Nigerians.
The president also spoke warmly about his personal relationship with Soyinka, highlighting their shared efforts toward national progress and unity.
He expressed gratitude for Soyinka’s decades of service to both Nigeria and humanity, wishing him continued good health and a sharp mind as he enters “the final stretch before his centennial.”
“I rejoice with Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on reaching another year and praise his continuing service and contributions to our nation’s development.
“Professor Soyinka is an uncommon patriot who has continued to demonstrate his undying love for our country.
“Even at the grand old age, he continues to be a source of inspiration to fellow citizens and people around the world. We are grateful for his long years of service to Nigeria and humanity.
“I value my association with Professor Soyinka and several collaborations to advance the progress and development of Nigeria.
“On this special day that marks the beginning of the journey into the last decade of his centennial, I wish Professor Wole Soyinka good health and more years in sound mind.”
KanyiDaily recalls that Wole Soyinka recently made it clear that he will assess President Bola Tinubu’s administration on his own terms, not based on public pressure.
