The incident was confirmed on Saturday by NSCDC spokesperson Afolabi Babawale in a phone conversation with TheCable.
At the time of filing this report, the officer’s identity had not been made public.
Videos shared online captured the moment the accident happened during what appeared to be a coordinated show-of-force drill.
In the video, the officer was hit and run over by a patrol vehicle as it made a turn.
The vehicle stopped shortly after, and colleagues and bystanders quickly rushed to help.
They lifted the vehicle to free her before emergency responders arrived and took her away from the scene.
Babawale confirmed that the officer later died, noting that senior officials of the corps were on their way to visit the deceased’s family to offer condolences.
“It is true we lost a personnel during the simulation exercise. Our senior officers are on their way to the residence of the deceased to pay our condolences,” he said.
He also stated that the agency has begun internal procedures following the incident and that a full statement would be released to explain what happened and the steps being taken.
