Daily Trust reports that Rachel died at a COVID-19 Isolation Centre in Lagos but a source close to Tunji, son of the veteran actress, stated that her death was not COVID-19 related as being peddled on social media.

Her son, Tunji said she was being treated for typhoid and malaria which she had tested positive for, and she passed on at about 10 pm on Friday, July 30, according to Tribune Online.

In the weeks leading to her death, the actress had reportedly been seen on set as part of the acting crew for her latest production being shot in Mowe, Ogun state.

Rachel Oniga Biography

The veteran actress, who was a native of Eku in Delta State, was born on 23 May 1957, in Ebutte Metta, Lagos State.

Rachel Oniga married a Yoruba man, but the marriage collapsed after she claimed another woman bewitched her husband and father of her children.

She began her acting career in 1993, shortly after her divorce. She worked briefly at Ascoline Nigeria Limited, a Dutch Consultant Company before her first movie titled Onome and her debut Yoruba movie was Owo Blow.

Over the years, Rachel Oniga has featured in notable Nigerian films such as Sango, a movie scripted by Wale Ogunyemi, produced and directed by Obafemi Lasode and Wale Adenuga’s television series, Super story.

Some of the major production she was part of include Chief Daddy, Royal Hibiscus Hotel, My Village People, Out of Bounds, The Wedding Party, 30 Days in Atlanta and Power of Sin.

Rachel was survived by three children and several grandchildren.

The sad news is coming at a time the movie industry is grappling with mixed issues and mourning the death of another entertainer, Sound Sultan, who passed on early this month.
