Insecurity: Let Nigerians Carry Arms, Oritsejafor Tells Jonathan

 

National president, Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to allow Nigerians to carry arms to defend themselves as a panacea to the raging crisis in Jos, Northern Nigeria….

According
to Oritsejafor, the president must stop the orgy of ethnic cleansing or accede
to recent calls for all Nigerians to carry arms.

Angered
by the reports of two bomb blasts at five minutes interval in parts of Jos
metropolis which left three persons hospitalised, the CAN president wondered
what country on earth would accommodate eight violent attacks without taking
decisive measures to stop what he described as “madness in Plateau State in the
past one month.”

He
lamented that scores of Nigerians have been killed by a bunch of rascals, saying
that it appears the Federal Government has no answer to the growing terrorism in
the country even after President Jonathanhad told the world that his government
had identified the sponsors of the mindless killings in Jos.

Oritsejafor
wondered whether the current development is part of the grand design by some
disgruntled elements to make the country ungovernable for Jonathan, noting that
Nigerians desired peace but “such peace could only come about through
justice.”

“As
a nation we cannot continue like this. There has to be a genuine demonstration
of commitment to the collective development of the country through honesty of
purpose,” he said.

He
stated that the killing of innocent villagers could not assuage for electoral
disadvantages, adding that if the government could no longer guarantee the
safety of lives and property of Nigerians, then the National Assembly should
immediately enact a law to make every Nigerian to carry arms for self
protection.

Oritsejafor
called on Jonathan to implement all the white papers of past panels of inquiry
into the Jos crisis, adding; “Nigerians desire peace in every part of the
country, but peace can only be built on justice. Until we see the need to tell
ourselves some truth, it will be difficult for the country to actualise its
dream of becoming one of the 20 most developed economies in the world in
2020.”

Also,
Chairman of CAN, North Central and Abuja, Rev. Yakubu Pam, said the crisis in
Jos had assumed a spiritual dimension and only the unity of the Church in
Nigeria could save the situation.
