President Bola Tinubu has approved the deployment of 65 ambassadors-designate to Nigeria’s diplomatic missions around the world, including positions at the United Nations, in an effort to strengthen the country’s presence abroad.

The list includes 31 political appointees and 34 career diplomats whose nominations were first submitted by the president in November and later confirmed by the Nigerian Senate in December 2025 after a screening exercise.

A statement released on Friday by Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said several well-known political figures were among those assigned to key diplomatic posts.

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri has been posted to Mexico, while former aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode will represent Nigeria in Germany.

Others include former senator Ita Enang, who has been assigned to South Africa, and former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, who will serve in Qatar.

A former Chief of Naval Staff, Ibok-Ete Ibas, has been posted to the Philippines, while Florence Ajimobi, the wife of a former Oyo State governor, will serve in Austria.

Other appointments include Aminu Dalhatu as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Lateef Kayode Are as ambassador to the United States, and Ayodele Oke as ambassador to France.

Several other political figures were also given diplomatic assignments.

Former Chief of Army Staff Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau will represent Nigeria in China, former Lagos deputy governor Olufemi Pedro has been posted to Australia, Isaac Adewole will serve in Canada, and Jimoh Ibrahim has been named Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Former Abia State governor Okezie Ikpeazu has been assigned to Spain, while former Enugu State governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi will serve in Greece.

In addition to the political appointments, 34 career diplomats have been posted to missions across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Among them are Nwabiola Chukwumeka to Côte d’Ivoire, Mohammed Lele to Algeria, and Ahmed Monguno to Egypt.

Other postings include Muhammad Dahiru to India, Haidara Idris to The Hague in the Netherlands, and Sulu Olatunji to Malaysia.

According to the presidency, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already started the diplomatic procedures required before the envoys can assume their duties.

The ministry has reportedly received approval from the United Kingdom for the posting of Aminu Dalhatu and from France for Ayodele Oke.

“The Ministry has also conveyed the nominations of the other 62 designated envoys to all the countries concerned, including a request for their agréments in line with standard diplomatic practice.

‘President Tinubu has directed that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs should immediately commence the induction programme for the ambassadors-designate and High Commissioners,” it added.

The appointments come after months during which several Nigerian diplomatic positions abroad remained vacant, a situation analysts said weakened the country’s representation in foreign missions.
