Trump shared the image on his platform, Truth Social, on Saturday morning.

The digitally created photo, which has already drawn over 12,000 reactions, was also reshared by the official White House account on X.

This comes shortly after the death of Pope Francis (Francis Bergoglio), who passed away on April 21, 2025, following a long illness.

The Vatican is now preparing for a conclave scheduled to begin on May 7 to select the next leader of the Catholic Church.

According to church tradition, only cardinals under 80 years old are allowed to vote, and 135 are expected to take part in the election from a total of over 250 cardinals worldwide.

Just last week, Trump joked to reporters that being Pope would be his “top choice” if given the opportunity.

When asked to elaborate, the president revealed he had no strong preference but said an American cardinal from New York could be a strong candidate.

Though clearly made in jest, Trump’s post and earlier comments have stirred reactions on the already closely watched papal transition.
