Namibian President, Hage Geingob is set to undergo cancer treatment following the discovery of “cancerous cells” during routine medical checkups.

The Namibian Presidency announced on Friday, January 19, that the 82-year-old leader underwent a colonoscopy and a gastroscopy on January 8, followed by a biopsy as part of regular annual medical examinations.

Upon the advice of the medical team, President Geingob will undergo appropriate medical treatment to address the cancerous cells, though no specific details regarding his diagnosis were provided.

Despite the health challenge, Geingob’s office assured that he will continue working.

Having served as president of Namibia since 2015, Geingob is approaching the end of his second and final term in office this year.

The President has faced health challenges in the past, including brain surgery in 2013, surviving prostate cancer in 2014, and undergoing an aortic operation in South Africa in 2023.

Namibia is gearing up for elections in November to select a new leader, as Geingob has decided not to stand for re-election.

The South West Africa People’s Organisation (SWAPO), the governing party, has named Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as its candidate for the upcoming election.

Nandi-Ndaitwah currently serves as the party’s vice-president and Namibia’s deputy prime minister.

KanyiDaily recalls that former Gabonese President, Ali Bongo was recently released from house arrest, eight days after he was outed out of power by the country’s military junta.
