Anambra State Police Command has reacted to reports making a round that its checkpoint was attacked by gunmen at Ihiala Local Government Area of the state.
Gunmen Attack Police Checkpoint In Anambra
It was reported that gunmen attacked a popular police checkpoint located along the Onitsha-Owerri road in Ihiala, killing many people and leaving others injured.
According to reports, the gunmen who allegedly came from the neighboring Mgbidi LGA of Imo State, opened fire on the policemen on duty, who took to their heels.
The incident was said to have caused traffic gridlock in the area as commuters traveling to Owerri from Onitsha were forced to make a U-turn and park their vehicles at the nearby Nkwo Ogbe market, Ihiala and at the Mgbidi end in Imo.
Police Deny Gunmen Attack
Reacting to the incident, Anambra police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, debunked the report in a statement and urged the public to disregard the information which he described as mischief.
The statement read, “The Command wishes to let the members of the public know, that there is no such incident of any attack on police checkpoints in Anambra state.
“Please kindly disregard it, it is an act of mischief makers who want to incite tension in the state. The Police shall continue to provide security and enhance peace in the state.”
KanyiDaily had also reported how a policeman and civilian were killed during an attack by gunmen at Oyo state police station over alleged bribery demand by the officers.
