Akwa Ibom Lawyer, Inibehe Effiong Regains Freedom After One Month In Prison

Inibehe Effiong has just been released from prison after spending 30 days for alleged contempt of court.

A Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong has regained his freedom after he was sent to prison by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot.

Lawyer Inibehe Effiong Released From Prison

On July 27, Effiong was sentenced to one-month imprisonment by the Akwa Ibom chief judge, after the lawyer reportedly protested against the presence of armed policemen in court.

Effiong said that the judge sent him to prison when he came to court to defend his fellow lawyer, Leo Ekpenyong, in a libel suit filed by Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom.

The lawyer served the first two weeks of his 30 days sentence at the Ikot Ekpene Custodial Center of the Nigeria Correctional Service before he was transferred to Uyo Custodial Centre to serve the remaining days.

After completing his jail term on Friday, August 26, Effiong walked out of the prison to regain his freedom at around 8 a.m. to a waiting crowd of supporters at the prison premises.

Speaking on his imprisonment, Effiong told journalists and supporters that his incarceration has strengthened his determination to fight for truth and justice in Nigeria.

He said, “I consider it an honour for me to be incarcerated for the truth. This voice, till no end, is now louder.

Taking to his Twitter page, he wrote: “I am back, stronger and more determined to confront the forces of oppression and to continue to speak nothing but the hard truth to the faces of the oppressors of our people. I feel sorry for those who thought they can break my spirit by incarcerating me.”

KanyiDaily recalls that Inibehe Effiong had recently filed a suit against the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Ekaette Obot, for allegedly violating of his fundamental human rights.
